Why is my AC blowing warm air? 7 causes and what to check first

Quick answer: usually a dirty filter, a tripped breaker, a clogged drain switch, or a failed capacitor. Here's how to tell which, and what you can safely check yourself.

Quick answer: if your home AC is blowing warm air, the most common causes are a thermostat set to 'fan on' or heat, a clogged filter that has frozen the coil, a tripped breaker or drain safety switch, or a failed capacitor in the outdoor unit. The first three you can check yourself in a few minutes.

Check these yourself first

  • Thermostat: make sure it's set to Cool, the fan is on Auto (not On), and the setpoint is below room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is faint.
  • Filter: a clogged filter starves the coil of air until it freezes. If the filter is gray and caked, replace it, switch the system off, and let any ice melt for a few hours.
  • Breakers: the outdoor unit has its own breaker and usually a disconnect box beside it. If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit is silent, check both.
  • Condensate drain: many systems have a float switch that shuts cooling off when the drain line backs up. Standing water in the drain pan is the giveaway.

Problems that need a technician

  • Failed capacitor: the outdoor fan doesn't spin or the unit hums. This is the most common summer failure in Florida and a quick repair.
  • Low refrigerant: means there's a leak. Topping up without finding the leak just delays the next breakdown.
  • Dirty or corroded outdoor coil: common near the beach, where salt air damages fins and cooling power drops slowly.

When to call

If you've checked the thermostat, filter and breakers and it still blows warm, turn the system off to protect the compressor and call. Running a system with a frozen coil or failed capacitor can turn a small repair into a big one.
